The National Mental Illness Awareness Week began Sunday, Oct. 2. This occasion is an opportunity to check in with the resources available at Portland State, and to offer support to those who struggle with mental health issues.
PSU construction focuses on campus improvements
Several construction projects are underway on Portland State’s campus. New student housing at College Station, an underground heating and cooling system and the yet-to-be-built Life Sciences building are the three major projects dominating PSU construction.
Education Abroad Fair to highlight PSU’s international academic programs
Next Thursday, Portland State students will have a chance to gain great insight into their school’s many studying abroad programs.
The PSU Education Abroad Fair will take place in the Smith Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 6, and will feature representatives from study abroad programs, travel agencies and the Peace Corps, as well as speakers from many different countries. There will also be information on internship and scholarship opportunities, and even free food and prizes.
Oregon Court of Appeals rules against OUS weapons ban
On Wednesday morning, the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled that the Oregon University System (OUS) did not have a right to keep guns off of public university campuses.
Yesterday morning, “the court concluded that the OUS’ administrative rule…which prohibits firearms and other weapons from campuses, is invalid,” according to an OUS press release.
All University Committees need students
A new school year means new ASPSU campaigns and plenty of All University Committee spots that need to be filled.
“Students need to know that these committees are doing important work,” said Sean Green, a member of the Budget Committee. “Out of 71 spots, the majority aren’t being filled year after year.”
PSU awarded $150,000 for Persian Studies program
Portland State received $150,000 earlier this month from the Persian Aligned Righteous Strategic Astute Community Foundation (PARSA CF), a grant aimed at revamping Portland State’s Persian/Iranian Studies program.
PARSA CF is a six-year-old philanthropic organization dedicated to preserving Persian arts and culture while creating leaders in the Persian/Iranian community by offering fellowships and awards.

Record enrollment at PSU
As the largest university in the state, Portland State currently has more than 26,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled for the fall 2011 term—the largest enrollment number the school has ever seen. Estimations of total student enrollment, or the enrollment count four weeks into fall term when registration is final, are around 30,000 students.
Classified workers settle with OUS
After threat of strike and a series of bargaining sessions, the Oregon University System’s (OUS) classified workers and administration officials announced a tentative contract agreement on Sep. 15. The settlement concluded an all-night bargaining session and was reached just before dawn.
Portland State’s new big hire
Already one month in office, Monica Rimai is PSU’s new vice president of finance and administration (FADM).
“I’ve known about Portland State for a long time,” Rimai said. “It’s an amazing place and I’m very attracted to this part of the world. So, when the opportunity came up, I applied.”
